Matthew Shepard 1976 – 1998:

Laramie, Wyoming 1998, Matthew was at a bar and abducted by two men, stripped naked, tied to a fence post, beaten, tortured and left in the freezing cold to die. Why? Because he was gay.

‘Gay Panic’ – It is an absurd legal defence which tries to excuse perpetrators of violent and lethal crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community. In essence, gay panic is a temporary insanity that a heterosexual person can experience that justifies violent and murderous actions committed against LGBTQ+ people. It fundamentally blames the victim’s sexual orientation as the reason for the defendant’s behaviour. Although the legal strategy is rarely successful, the very notion that people still believe that there is such an insanity is in itself (dare I say it) insane!
